Diary of a Tour Wife: Stephanie Paterek (The Gaslight Anthem)

Trust is essential in a relationship where physical distance is a constant challenge. Is this something you built over time or did you have it from the beginning?
Trust and respect has always been the foundation of our relationship, and after 16 years together, we know that sometimes life throws drama our way. It’s inevitable—things pop up from time to time.  Open communication and honestly has helped us. This is muscle that has to be worked on constantly.

How do you balance personal life/work life with the demands of their husband's career?
To be real—everything in our world revolves around his touring schedule, especially with young kids in the mix. I have to take on much more when he's physically gone. But when he’s home and I’m facing a big SexTrash deadline, or need some friend time, he steps in and takes on all the roles to help me out. It’s a constant juggling act, which has taking years to figure out.

How do you support your husband, both emotionally and logistically?
While he is on the road, I keep everything running smoothly—managing life, family, and all the chaos in between. Us wives are the unseen backbone of the entire operation.

The demands of the road can take a toll on both physical and mental health. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be challenging with irregular schedules, lack of routine, and constant movement. What are some of the biggest challenges you & your husband face, such as post tour dopamine drop or dealing with time apart, or the pressures of your careers?

The post-tour dopamine drop is a real thing. Waking up in a new city every morning, performing at sold-out venues, surrounded by energy and adrenaline. On a constant high, catered to, achieving incredible milestones. And then, BAM—back home, smacked by the contrast of everyday life. From drummer to baseball coach in the same week.
It’s a tough shift to navigate, going from those extreme highs to the reality of routine, but it’s part of the journey. Finding balance and adjusting after those highs takes time, patience, and a lot of grounding.

What do you find most rewarding about being a tour wifey?
As an artist, I truly appreciate watching the process from a far—the trust, the brotherhood, and the growth that happens within the band. It’s so fucking cool to watch them shine and evolve together. Seeing their journey, both individually and as a unit, reminds me just how powerful creativity and collaboration can be. Ohhh and travel is fun too!
